PostHeaderIcon Shall I Work Data Entry Jobs?

People very widely as to whether or not they would want to work at home. Many have tried it and never went back, and others couldn’t stand it or couldn’t be productive and went back to the “office” way of doing things. It really depends on what kind of a person you are and whether things like data entry jobs are for you.

Some people are self motivated, able to concentrate on the task at hand (whether it be eating a burger or doing data entry jobs) despite very accessible distractions, and are disciplined enough to make a regular schedule that allows them to be very productive while not allowing themselves to be imprisoned–never able to escape their job which is always right there. Others need a change of scenery, need extra motivation slash accountability that working with coworkers brings, feel isolated, or just don’t plain enjoy their house enough to be at home all the time. This is more of an old-fashioned–off to the factory–mentality.

How hard is it for you to do the normal things of life like go to the bank, doctor, etc.? If you are like most it is next to impossible because there are only so many personal days and the typical 40 hour week is inflexible and unyielding. You see there are too many amazing benefits that come with data entry jobs that allow you to work from home and flexibility is the most valuable one of them all. So first major benefit, you get to stay healthy and on top of your money.

Next benefit of this amazing flexibility is that you can take breaks when you
want to. When I say breaks I mean breaks as in vacations which are very necessary to your health as well. Think of it this way–working from outer space is almost the same as working from Europe (or data entry jobs, you choose!). Last major benefit is dress code, or lack thereof. Don’t get me wrong if you would rather work in a stiff white shirt and tie than luxurious soft sweat pants than you can!

Unfortunately only the first and not the second group of data entry jobs are able to enjoy the amazing and unique benefits of working at home that are there to take advantage of. So stop your boring job in the cubicle and get on board with the rest of us internet jockeys and work as you will. Fortunately, as this world becomes more linked globally through the wonders of technology, this second group of people (those who cannot work from home) is becoming the minority. You will wonder why you ever did it any different.

PostHeaderIcon Voluntary Work Can Enhance Your CV

Historically people who did voluntary work has to endure something of a bad reputation as being ‘do gooders’ or people who wanted to interfere, but those days are certainly long gone. Now employers positively value people who take on voluntary work, because they feel that volunteering shows that people have not just a sense of community pride, but that they are willing to give something back to the community and learn new skills and have new experiences.

So if an employer wants to employ someone and is torn between two ideal candidates, s/he is more likely to give the position to the person who spends their Saturdays working as part of a team planting woodlands or restoring dry stone walls (or similar) rather than the person who lists their main out of hours hobby or interest as being retail therapy. Everyone can shop, but not everyone can work as part of a team, or show that they have leadership skills, through leading a Brownie Pack etc.

The volunteering does not have to be too demanding, but it should be something that is an interest for you. It need not be related to your career, but you need to review your CV once you have started voluntary work and actively show how the skills that you have acquired as a volunteer can be transferred into the workplace. So you use volunteering to actively jazz up your CV, which is a win - win situation for everyone.

You may think that if your are temping then whether or not you volunteer is irrelevant, but again, a recruitment agency will value any voluntary work that you do and will perhaps encourage you to transfer the skills learned into securing new temping positions, so effectively you cant lose out and you may meet some great new friends along the way.

PostHeaderIcon What Not To Wear To The Office

It is always difficult to find the fine line between looking smart, looking at your best and ending up looking like someone who has just dressed that little bit inappropriately. In days long gone, it used to be easy to know what to wear to the office, but now it is so much harder to know what looks right and what doesn’t or even what is appropriate.

But here are some style tips to keep you looking smart and efficient, but not too old fashioned!

First of all dress according to the style of the office. If everyone else wears jeans and loose fitting shirts with no tie, then this is appropriate. But similarly if everyone else wears a suit then you will fit in better if you wear a suit.

Fashion is fine, after a style. If you want to look like a Goth or Punk outside of work, then great, but try to keep things toned down when at work, others may find it a bit too much if you wear full Goth regalia.

You may have to wear a uniform, in which case: wear it, do not try to customise it too much. You aren’t at school now, so this isn’t about expressing your individuality.

Women should refrain from dressing too provocatively. If you look like you are out clubbing, you may not be taken seriously.

Jewellery should be kept to a minimum and you shouldn’t wear anything that could possibly cause offence to other people in the office, particularly if some of them are religious or just very old fashioned.

Whilst a dress code for the office may seem restrictive, it actually enables you to fully express your personality when you leave the office. So you can leave the specs behind and suddenly become the vamp on the town!
